I am new to aviation, I've never flown in anything other than a jetliner or FSX. I finally committed myself to getting my Sport Pilot cert and so i downloaded the PHAK from the FAA and i made a nice big folder with that. The only problem was that i didnt know what was pertinent to sport pilots and even the things that were were hard to understand. Reading was a chore, i would lose interest in reading the PHAK within minutes. In a week im a quarter of the way through this book (this is studying to memorize not just reading) and it is a real pleasure to learn with this book. Rod has laid it in a manner that a kid would pass the knowledge exam after reading it. Definitely worth every pennyAnd to the guy that said the book was "silly"..... there is no lack of common sense in this book. After reading the first 5 pages i concluded that Rod is a very seasoned and knowledgeable pilot. His way of conveying his knowledge is unique and effective, definitely not "silly."

All I can say is I don't write book reviews for a living and that I liked the book enough. What more can I say?
It contains all the good material to study for the test but the author writing style is silly and I feel like I am reading a kids book. There are unnecessary jokes, comments and stories that doesn’t help or support the discussed topic. Some figures are good some others look as if a toddler put them together.

Lots of anecdotal info but can make for a slow read.
I used Rod's book to get me through Sport Pilot, and eventually private pilot license. It's true, he does add a LOT of corny jokes into the mix, but he provides a knowledge base that is thorough and chock full of great memory tips. One of the things that makes Rod an amazing teacher is that he does not just list facts, he explains WHY things are they way they are. He is also a huge proponent of safe flying. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone starting out for the sport pilot license.
