Exit Strategy A Nick Mason Novel Steve Hamilton Books

Steve Hamilton is a treasure. His characters are deep and surprising, his stories are absolutely distinct from others in the genre, and his writing is tight as a drum. I read Lee Child, I read Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, I read Dennis LeHane, I read Stephen King, for goodness' sake, and STILL I'm just dazzled by everything Steve Hamilton writes.

Try to read everything in sequence. This is the second book in the Nick Mason series, and you really do want to read the first one (The Second Life Of Nick Mason) first. And then go back to the very beginning of his Alex McKnight series (A Cold Day In Paradise) with the knowledge that you can live in those books for quite awhile before you run out! And then finally, saving what many people consider the best for last -- set aside a couple of days and sit down with The Lock Artist. It's unlike anything you've ever read, and it will wholly engulf you. A true masterpiece that raised quite a stir in the publishing industry.

I recently saw Steve Hamilton at a booksigning, and he promised us more books in both series, and suggested that The Lock Artist may have a sequel as well... so there's a lot to look forward to! I hope you enjoy this author as much as I do!

Exit Strategy A Nick Mason Novel Steve Hamilton Books Reviews

I like Steve Hamilton. I thought 'the lock artist" was great. It was the first of his novels that I read. I then read the Alex McKnight series which I also enjoyed. Crisp writing, good empathy for characters, nice use of language. The first of this series "the second life of Nick Mason" upset me...dark, desperate, amoral? I was tempted to not read this...but I caved in. It cleared things, confused things, was very dramatic and altogether quite good. I do not know where the series will go.
I have loved Steve's books since his very first back in the late 1990s. This one is very different from the others and I didn't expect the ending at all. I found the main character (can't call him a hero) to be endearing in several ways but wouldn't want to be a close friend! -). My daughter and I had a quick brunch with Steve when he was in Austin last week where we learned his next book will be another Alex McKnight which is already written but not published yet. I suspect the one after that will be another episode in the life of Nick Mason.
This book is just more of the same character. I would like to see Steve revive his writing with more Alex McNight novels.
This is the first Steve Hamilton book I didn't like. I wish I could give the first half of the book 4 stars, and the second half 1 star. Hamilton's writing is a crisp as ever, and the book seemed to be going somewhere initially. But half-way through he seemed to loose his way, almost as if he was in a rush to finish the book. First the pre-spoiler criticisms the chapters started becoming a little disjointed in second half of the book, the narrative wasn't fluid from scene to scene. Also, the action became repetitive and boring - oh god, not another crazy impossible setup that Nick amazingly fights his way out of, for the umpteenth time. But the biggest problem with this book is that the plot elements are predictable and formulaic (see below for details), and the tension is created by button-pushing (cute child and/or lover in danger), rather than actual mystery.

The real criticisms require a spoiler alert, if you don't want plot elements revealed, stop reading.

Spoiler
At the end of this book, Nick's situation is exactly the same, except all the interesting characters have been killed, and he's still in thrall to higher powers, lest his family be killed. Why would I read another? Why did I read this one? The journey wasn't that enjoyable - shootout / interlude / fistfight-in-a-subway / interlude / another shootout / interlude / crazy climatic shootout, everyone is dead, the end. There is no real plot, and more importantly, no real mystery. The tension is entirely provided by threat of death to Nick's family and loved ones. And you know pretty much everyone will get killed except Nick. He romances all available women, only to lose them. It's more predictable than a Roger Moore James Bond movie.

I still love Steve Hamilton, but this book isn't very good. Read "The Lock Artist" or any of the Alex McKnight books instead.
I am a huge Steve Hamilton fan. I have read all of his books and think he is one off the most underrated mystery and thriller writers of our time. Having just been sorely disappointed by two of my other favorite authors who seem to have been blinded by the Hollywood lights and recently released books that were slow and boring. I was worried if this would be the case with Mr. Hamilton. NO WAY! From the first page to the last this book is a absolutely terrific... it defines the description "page turner." So thanks Mr. Hamilton for another beautifully wriiten and well crafted book. Please keep up the great writing and if you must go "Hollywood" be true to your roots always remember you are a writer. Thanks for the thrill ride and I can't wait for your next book.
This is the second of the Nick Mason books by Mr. Hamilton, and I liked it more than I liked the first. I have read all of Mr. Hamilton's books and have enjoyed them. My personal favorite is "The Lock Artist," and if you have haven't read that book, get it. It is one of the most inventive books of this genre in years. His series character is an ex-cop, ex-ballplayer, who now lives in the UP, and they are good mystery-thrillers. He started this series about a disgraced cop, Nick Mason, who is released from prison and becomes a hired killer for the crime-lord who was instrumental in getting him released. Though the first book was well-done I found it not as enjoyable as his other works. I guess I had a hard time warming up the our hero. I still am not very excited about Nick Mason in this book, though there is a lot more humanity in this story. I will say that this one is exciting from the first page to the last and the tempo is quick. It's a hard book to walk away from, and the ending hints at more to come. Recommended--but read "The Lock Artist" first.
