Coyote Waits Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee Novels Tony Hillerman Books
As with all the novels in this series, I enjoyed learning about the spiritual practices of the Navajo. An elderly Navajo shaman is accused of murder. Unfortunately, he won’t deny, defend, or answer any questions. He simply sits in passive silence while Detectives Leaphorn and Officer Chee take separate paths to finding out the truth of the incident. Coyote is a wild card in Navajo mythology and a danger sign to anyone who knows his true character. The story takes us deep into the witch lands and strange happenings that take place there.

Coyote Waits Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee Novels Tony Hillerman Books Reviews
I have enjoyed all of Tony Hillerman’s books, and this one is definitely up to par. The mystery is puzzling, and I enjoy how Jim Chee and Lt. Leaphorn sort their way through it. It is so interesting to learn about Navaho customs and beliefs while reading Hillerman’s books, and the descriptions of the Southwest make the reader feel like he is there.
Hillerman once more delivers a novel that allows a reader to experience a little of Navajo culture and spiritual beliefs as well as the frustrations Indians experience when trying to live in a world in which cultures collide. As always, Hillerman provides a carefully crafted mystery with no immdiate hints as to solution. This novel will hold your interest and will keep you reading.
This will sound strange, but I gave this book 5 stars even though I haven't read it yet. I downloaded it recently and haven't had time to read it yet, and was asked to review it before I got a chance to read it. Probably read it years ago, but don't remember it however. I gave it 5 stars because I've read so many other of Hillerman's Chee and Leaphorn books and they were all 5 star books so I'm sure this one is as well. Hillerman was a master story teller and his books based on the Southwest are excellent.
I love the Hillerman mysteries and am captivated by his insights into the Navajo culture and belief system. The Chee and Leaphorn books might never go down as literary masterpieces, and the plots might have some minors glitches, but I know of no other writer that can evoke the essence of a place and lifestyle that this author can. Now that I'm retired, I'm reading the entire series for the second time in my life (this time in chronological order) and it's even more enjoyable than the first. I hope one day to be able to visit the Four Corners area.
Tony Hillerman's "Coyote Waits" is one of his more emotionally gripping Leaphorn & Chee novels. We've got the wonderful Navajo setting, Navajo/White philosophical conflicts, Jim Chee temperamental/professional conflicts, nice mystery, and good resolution. What makes this story more emotional than the others is that the crime is much closer and more personal to Jim Chee than before. A gripping book. I rate it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.
Hillerman's "Leaphorn & Chee" novels are
1. The Blessing Way
2. Dance Hall of the Dead
3. Listening Woman
4. People of Darkness
5. The Dark Wind
6. The Ghostway (Jim Chee Novels)

If you've ever been to New Mexico and Arizona the Leaphorn/Chee stories will really click for you. The terrain and country where the stories are set are as big a challenge as the crimes they investigate. The author obviously spent a lot of time on the details, like the drive times, to keep the story timelines true. (I have a pet peeve about writers that have their characters drive long distances in unrealistic times.) The Navajo culture is not a subject I have studied in depth, so I can't say how accurate it is in the book. It isn't so detailed that there would have been a lot of creative license taken in the description. Everytime I read one of Hillerman's novels I want to go back to New Mexico.
Late one night on patrol Jim Chee screws up bad and his mistake puts him in the hospital and a good friend, Delbert Nez, in the morgue. He becomes obsessed with tracking down the truth about what happened that night. On the other side of the rez Joe Leaphorn is bored and seriously contemplating retiring from a job that has lost its flavor since his wife died when he is approached with an interesting problem. The elderly Navaho accused of Nez's murder holds the key to both men's problems but he refuses to talk. Wouldn't you know it the suspect's lawyer is Chee's would be/wanna be girl friend returned home from her big law firm job in D.C. with a broken heart from an affair with her boss. Mysteries pile up with a dearth of answers as Chee and Leaphorn swing into action. Well done read with plenty of Hillerman's signature touches-Indian lore, beautiful scenery, the ever present weather hanging over everything, oblivious FBI agents, likable characters, a puzzling mystery and a touch of romance for both of our leads(Joe Leaphorn-romance !/?).
